OUR STORY

Our Story

A Family-Owned Business Since 1938

Our family has been serving great food and Texas-sized hospitality for more than seventy-five years. Today, DeWese’s Tip Top Cafe is one of the oldest family-owned restaurants in the state and we’re still following in the tradition of cookin’ up homestyle meals, nothing fancy – just food for our loyal family of customers. Some of our specialties are chicken fried steak, onion rings, fried shrimp, and homemade pies.

We’ve set the table for mayors and mechanics, and we’re proud to say that everyone feels at home while dining with us.

“Very little has changed since my grandparents, Winnie and Pappy DeWese, started the restaurant in 1938. The bass caught by my dad and brother, the mounted deer heads, knotty pine walls, and neon are all part of the nostalgia that add to our history and character. My family and employees invite you to have a good meal with friends you have yet to meet. Welcome to our Tip Top Family. Thanks for stopping in and visiting us. We hope to see you again soon!”

Who We Are

From the beginning, we’ve only ever wanted one thing: to leave customers smiling from ear to ear with our homemade Texas-sized dishes! We still hold our humble beginnings close to this day as we serve locals and tourists alike. We’ve even had the pleasure to serve chef and restaurateur Guy Fieri on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives!

In 2018, we were bestowed the City of San Antonio Proclamation from Mayor Ron Nirenberg. We consider this one of our finest achievements. Patrons can also find Tim Duncan’s ESPN photo on our wall and even sit at our commemorative counter stool that was once frequented by radio legend Bruce Hathaway!

Every dish that we serve is homemade. Starting in the early morning, we prep fresh ingredients and pour love into every offering on our menu. Customer favorites include our fresh, daily made pies, and award-winning onion rings and chicken fried steak!
